Use Your Words: The Hunger Games

I hunkered down...watching.
Waiting.
I could see him moving about, hear the clank of his tags, smell his scent.
I couldn't let him see me. If he did, it would most certainly be death.

So I waited.
I watched.

Then, I made my move.

Using the darkness as a blanket, I crept out of my hiding spot. My stomach was growling, it had been days since I'd eaten. I could smell the remnants of food in the air. It was close and I was hungry. Keeping an eye on him, I slowly made my way toward the smell, my mouth watering at the mere thought of a delicious morsel.

I saw the house and knew the family was home, tucked warmly in their beds. I eased into their home, careful to avoid any kind of sudden movement, careful to not make any noise. If I could get through this without incident, I'd be pleased.

Lowing myself closer to the ground, I made my way to the pantry. Opening the door, I held my breath. *creeeeeeeek*

Dang it.

This was going to be a catastrophe. I knew it!

I looked around, expecting to find him sanding behind me.

I was shocked that he wasn't.

I knew I had to work quickly. I grabbed food by the handfuls, turned and ran. I heard footsteps and the sound of someone making the comment of "Oh great...he's back".

I'd been caught! Or so I thought.

I ran through the opening, sliding on the dirt and grime. Making my way back to my hiding spot, I stopped for a brief moment to catch my breath.

I'd outsmarted them again. I was going to eat again.

I was victorious!

Moving deeper into the darkness, I found a comfortable spot to fill my belly.

A bright light invaded the space leading to my hiding spot, but I knew I was safe. Next time, I'd have to be more careful to not make so much noise.

As the house settled down again, I felt my eyes getting heavy. I laid down in my makeshift bed and let sleep take over. I would do this all again tomorrow.

And the next day.

And the day after that.

Because I was a mouse and it's just what I had to do.

Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them.

Until now.

My words were "catastrophe ~ comment ~ without ~ blanket ~ family" and they are from the Queen B herself, Karen from Baking In A Tornado! Loved the words!!
